I kicked at the cage. Nothing happened. I gritted my teeth in frustration. Great. I knew he would cause trouble. "Ace, don't!"

Ace turned around to look at the two. Were they worried about him? Or was it just because they were afraid that Gaea might make him join? He was full of doubt. What were they thinking of him now? He looked at Gaea, then the swirling green globe. He looked at Shade and Caroline. They did seem worried after all...
"Thank you, and... I'm sorry. I just can't listen to you guys." Ace closed his eyes and reached out an arm. His fingertips touched the swirling energy. There was a loud crackle as it flowed up his arm and encased him.

In that moment, Gaea let out a laugh. "You will regret having those memories, my dear." Immediately Shade and Caroline's bonds fell away. The green light faded from around Ace and he closed his eyes and crashed to the grass unconscious. Gaea sank into the ground.

Ace felt incredibly dizzy. Images swirled through his mind as he tried to fight the torrent of pictures. They began to organize themselves. He felt so tired. Maybe he should sleep... Ace fell to the ground unmoving as the green aura faded around him.

As soon as the cage disappeared, I glanced over at Shade. "You okay?"
I stared at Ace's body. "He's not dead, right?"

"You idiot! Stop!"
Shade watched as he came in contact with the energy. It swirled around Ace in a bright green light and then faded. Gaea disappeared, Shade and Caroline were free, and Ace went unconscious. Shade nodded to Caroline and made his swords disappear. He ran up to Ace.
"Hey! You alright?"
He bent down. He was still breathing...
"Yeah, he's alive."

I shot Shade a glance. "Should we take him back to camp, or just wait until he wakes up here?"

Shade was silent at that. He remembered that he was being a hypocrite. He had also taken up Gaea's offer.

Everything swirled around him. He remembered everything. Ace was nearly shocked to death. But now it all made sense. Why Gaea wanted to kill him, that is. His betrayal to her must have been a really big shock to her.
Ace had seen enough of the cruelty though. Ever since the first battle and Krissie killing the little girl, he had realized that this was wrong. What Gaea had been doing was wrong.
Ace had announced he would leave. She had been furious. He knew she would have tried to kill him. It must have been hard for her to kill him. She had been holding back a bit. But at their encounter, she was full of hatred. No doubt his betrayal had made her overcome her trust in him. She probably wanted to kill him more than anyone right now.
His name was Herum. The Latin roots combined to make the meaning "Fighting Earth". The name suited him better than Ace. But he didn't want that name.
Ace heard voices. He slowly stirred and opened his eyes. He saw Shade looking down at him.

Shade shook his head at Caroline.
"You dont need to be sorry. It's fine.."
After a period of time, Ace shifted finally. Shade blinked and watched as he opened his green eyes.
"Did you remember anything, you idiot?"

The first words that greeting his pounding head made Ace wince. He sat up suddenly, remembering where he was. Now he understood why he had seen them as a threat reflexively. He was a threat to them. He didn't belong here. He got up, tottering unevenly and backing up.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. Just stay away from me now on." Ace's voice was filled with fear.

Shade told Caroline. He watched Ace back away.
"Dude, calm down. It's alright now. I'm not mad. Can you tell us everything about yourself now?"

Shade narrowed his eyes. His memories must have been traumatizing if they were making him act like this. He said forcefully to Ace.
"What did you remember? Tell us. NOW."
