Terry was In his cabin doing the usual Minerva thing when he heard a knock on the door. He got up and opened the door. He nodded in thanks and confusion as a Mercury kid dropped off an envelope. I have no family, friends....who would send me a letter? The stamp of an owl and a familiar signature on the corner of the envelope was enough to make him freeze. Dodge? He slowly opened the envelope. The past day when he had thought back on his crappy history made him feel more frustration rather than anger at the name of his brother. Why would that killer send him a letter? He slowly opened it.

Shade blinked at the smooth white paper in his hand. His skin looked just as pale next to the paper, and his hands shook as he held it. Why would Dodge out of all people send him a letter? He felt like ripping it apart at his betrayal. For just leaving him. Anger mixed with confusion and hope. Was he going to meet him again? What would this letter say? Shade carefully unfolded the paper and read the contents.
Dear kid, I'm really sorry I left without a reason. I'm going to tell you this reason very soon. But I'm glad to know you made it to this camp. I'm going to tell you right now about all my sins. What I have done. I want you to have a new friend. He will protect you and stick by your side no matter what. I want you to go to the lake. Meet him there. He should be waiting for you.
Shade stopped reading, then he pushed open the door of his cabin and walked out to the lake.

Terry ran to the lake, the words echoing through his mind. The letter was wrinkled in his tight grip.
Hey bro, never thought I would be able to write to you again. But nice you do, I'm probably dead by then. I would be surprised if you read it, but even more so if you don't. I'm here to tell you the reason of my actions. I wasn't your ideal brother. I never was. And I never expect for you to forgive me, but only to read on.
I'm glad you made it to the roman camp. I knew you would find it. I want you to go to the lake. I told a friend to go meet you there. A kid who knows me. A son of Pluto. He will be your companion. I want you to protect him. I want you to to help each other.

He unfolded the letter, the curiosity getting the better of him. He walked and read.
It started out with living with my two brothers. You saw the picture the day I left, didn't you? Yeah, that was my younger brother, Terry. We both had a smaller brother named Kevin. Your father always saw the best for you. So he asked me to train you. You had been living in the underworld with your father. Bet you don't remember that part, do you? He erased your memory. Replaced it with a new one. The one where you had been living with me all your life. In truth, we had just spent three years together. I was a kid who lived a normal life, taking care of my two brothers. And I was able to kill monsters that got close to us. He had set his eyes on me some time ago. But I had my two brothers. I had to turn him down.

The lake was a long way from here. So he stopped for a while. He opened the letter and continued.
I refused Lord Hades for many times. That's when he got angry. He wanted me to take care of this child. He said his kid had lived with him for too long. He was a demigod. He needed to live in the world of humans. He erased the kid's memory. Then he replaced them with new ones, making him think I had lived with him and raised him since he was born.
Then came the night that I wished had never happened. Terry, I didn't know what to do. Lord Hades called me out. So I got my weapon. I went out to the park, and left a letter for you. I had hoped you would find it in the morning. And you would perhaps find me dead. But you woke up too soon. So I left for the park. And Kevin, he followed me. He decided it would be smart to follow me. When I arrived at the park, Thanatos was waiting for me. The Greek god of death himself. He told me to go do my job, or die. I told him that I was going to return to my brothers. Thanatos was going to kill me. And I accepted that. But Kevin protected me. It happened so fast, Terry! I didn't even know where he came from! Then he was just dead.

Shade's eyes widened. His father killed Dodge's brother! Well, he had sent Thanatos to do it.
My smallest brother was dead. It gave Thanatos an idea. He threatened me. He told me he would kill Terry. My other brother. the thought terrified me. I couldn't let him do it. "Convince him you are leaving him. Then we can go." So I followed his orders. Terry came sooner than I expected. I had to keep up the act. It hurt. I told him I had killed Kevin. And I hurt Terry. Then I left with Thanatos.

He had...faked it all?! He didn't kill Kevin? Relief washed over him.
But it was still my fault that Kevin had died. It was still my fault that I deceived you, hurt you. I'm so sorry for that. I won't ask you to forgive me. I have no right to do that. And I curse that day more than any other day of my life. The look you had in your eyes made me nearly go mad. I felt numb. As if this really couldn't be happening. And when I left with Thanatos, I wish I had just died instead. But I wouldn't let you die, bro. Not on my watch.
The kid he led me to was cute. He was younger than you. Only nine when you were eleven when this happened. I raised him for three years, deceiving him. I went along with it. I pretended I had mentored him for his whole life. That I had always been tree for him. His whole life was a lie. And it was my fault. I grew attached to him. He reminded me of Kevin so much, bro. They would have been best friends.
Terry smiled. Best friends, huh?

Shade reached the lake. He chose a tree, and slumped down to sit. He was stumped. He hadn't lived with Dodge his whole life. His life was a lie....?
I'm sorry for deceiving you all these years. As I'm writing this letter, you're sleeping right next to me. I love you, kid. And I really do. Like a little brother. I can't repent at all for what I did. Fortune did not shine on my life. But I might have a chance in my next one. Yesterday in the afternoon, I was tidying my things when a picture of Terry slipped out of my pack. I had forgotten about it. And I realized that this charade should end. I should end it. I couldn't let this go on. So I left.

Terry walked to the edge of the water and stopped. He finished the last of the letter.
I left him without a word. I told him to go to the camp you guys are in right now. I want you two to protect each other. I want you two to be friends. I swear to you he is just like Kevin. He even looks like him. His serious expression. His dark black hair. His hazel eyes have black and smoky flecks. He's stubborn, but cute. So innocent and trusting. Help me protect him Terry because I couldn't. I'm probably no longer around anymore. I wrote this letter and put a one year delay on it with my powers. And I'm going to hand myself over to Thanatos because I didn't finish my job. Keep each other company, alright? Do it for me. Find him. He should be with you at the lake. His name is Shade.

Shade stood up, the letter folded carefully in his hand. He looked and saw a tall figure standing at the edge of the water. His brown hair styled just like Dodge's.....Shade found himself running.
I don't regret giving my life. It was due a long time ago before. I owe my brothers this small favor. And you owe me the favor of staying alive, kid. My brother Terry will meet you at the lake. Go make some friends. He will watch you like I never could. And I'm sorry. I lied to you again. I don't think we could ever meet again.
Too many emotions. Way too many. There was so much. He wasn't sure how to feel. One would surface then another would bump it out of the way. They flashed, throbbed, going faster and faster. Then he just threw them all away. He was going to meet Terry.

He turned around at the noise of running feet. He saw a kid of about thirteen. He really did nearly mistaken him for Kevin. As the kid reached him, he smiled and ruffled his hair. How was he so calm? This feeling was like taking care of Kevin. Greeting him. They both held identical letters. The stamp of a silver owl. And the signature both knew so well.
"Shade, am I right?"

"Yeah..." Shade fixed his hair. He was just like Dodge. Yeah. This was Dodge's brother. They looked a lot alike. Except for the glasses. He sat down by the water's edge. "Nice to meet you, Terry."

He sat down with him. "It's nice to meet you too." He looked out at the calm water. "Well, my nasty brother pulled a fast one on me. Looks like he just dumped us together. Always bossing me around."

"Yeah, the jerk...." For the first time since Dodge left, Shade smiled. It was warm here. And Dodge was still beside him. Beside both of them. Sitting in the middle, arms tossed around both of their shoulders. He was there. Just no one could see him anymore. But he was there. Through the letter he had talked to him. dodge was wrong. They had met again. And Shade was satisfied.
He sat with Terry in silence. Complete strangers, but actually closer than they thought. They would be good friends, like Dodge said.
