As Jacob was walking through the forest, he stopped. He decided he'd take a break before he went to his cabin. He'd prefer not to be around people. What is wrong with me? Jacob thought. Ari. What is she doing to me? I can't think straight when I'm with her. I'm Athena's son. It's not right. He sat down, leaning against a tree. Then he switched to a subject that he'd thought about too much. Mikayla. Was Erebus lying? Is she dead? Or did he just want to torture me? I feel so helpless. I can't kill a god. Suddenly, the trees and the night sky disapeared. Just black purgatory. Much like when Erebus delivered his horrifying message. "You want your sister?" a voice asked from behind him. No. No. No. Not you. Not now, Jacob thought. Jacob turned around slowly. Painfully slowly. What? Jacob thought, shocked. Erebus wasn't there. It was Gaia.

(Oh you know you'll miss me  ) Jacob was shocked. "Gaia? What do you want? You're the one who took Crys- I mean, Krissie. Why the hell are you here?" Gaia laughed. "You should learn some manners." Jacob stopped. "What do you mean, 'Do you want your sister?'?" Jacob asked. "Erebus k-killed her, didn't he?" Gaia said, "Oh Erebus... he's such a nuisence. No, she's not dead. We decided it would be best to keep her alive. Which is why I'm here. And I'll cut to the chase. We want you.. If you help us, you get your sister." Jacob was astounded. "S-she's a-alive?" he said. He shook his head. "What if you're lying?" "Well," Gaia said. "You're bright. Look..." She conjured a boulder to come up from the ground. She touched it, and an image was burned into it. A cage. It was woven from dried roots. Insidde it was... Mikayla! "This is her right now," Gaia said. "Now, will you join our cause?" Jacob knew she could be lying. It wasn't legitimate proof. But Jacob made a promise. He would protect his sister. And he planned on keeping that promise. Jacob paused and Gaia smiled. "I'll do it." |
