Shade was wordless after the battle. His black eyes stared out at the grass. He had gotten away from the battle. He had retreated early. Gaea was bored, deciding to leave him alone to his feelings. The black faded from his eyes, turning hazel.
The feelings crashed in like a torrent, threatening to drown him. Shade grabbed his chest, gasping. Cold sweat ran down his neck. Terry closing his eyes as Shade stabbed him through the side. Shade pinning his friend to the ground by the shoulder. Shade threatening to kill him, holding his blade to his neck. Shade closing in a Hades fire on Terry to burn him to death. Shade slashing out at his half sister, Emmy. Shade returning fire with her energy. Summoning skeletons to kill her, Jeremy, and Willow. Slashing at Caroline's arm as she was trying to help him....
But what hurt most were their expressions. They were full of pain, disbelief, and the worst. Worry. Hesitant. They cared about him, they were worried about him when he was trying to kill them. He covered his head and brought up his knees, curling into a defensive ball. Tears welled up at the corners of his eyes. He was truly lost, gone.

Jade was taking a walk through the woods, drawing near the Wolf House. Or what it used to be. As a spy for Camp Half Blood. She would be of use. Attack Gaea when she had her guard down or something. She spotted a older teen sitting by a tree. She noticed that he was wounded. Probably from the volunteer battle that she hadn't joined. Izumi started walking up to him, but stopped.
She watched as he curled up. Were those...tears? He looked like he was in pain. Izumi rushed up to him. Even if he was a soldier of Gaea, he was a demigod. "Hello? Are you alright, De Arimasu?"

Shade looked up at the noise. He saw a small Asian girl run up to him. He blinked away the hints of tears quickly. He watched her come up to him.
"It was nothing, I'm fine."
He didn't want anyone to know he was having doubts about joining Gaea and fighting with his friend's.

Izumi knew better than anyone. She was a master at reading expressions, and lies.
"You looked like you were hurting a lot, De Arimasu." Her voice was a gentle whisper. This person obviously didn't like fighting the other demigods. He looked like he had gone through some emotional trauma.

Shade looked at her dark brown eyes with his gray flecked hazel ones. He realized he was still grabbing his shirt where his chest was. He released it. The wrinkles told him he had been clutching it too tightly to lie to her. This little girl...who was she? An odd one.
"Aaron Shade, son of Pluto, 15. Call me Shade."
He told her.

"Atskuo Izumi. Daughter of Nike. Eleven. Please call me Jade, De Arimasu." She smiled at his greeting, replying back gently.
She had a soft voice that soothed and calmed. She never enjoyed fighting or injuring anyone. She was too kind.
So Shade was a Roman. She wondered what his reason for joining was. He seemed like going into battle against demigods and his friends was a painful thing. That meant he had heart. He wasn't bad. Not all bad yet

This girl had a particular way of talking. Judging by her name, she was Japanese. And the phrase she added at the end of her sentences must become habit. The way people said 'like' or 'um' before they talked. Shade was surprised by her smile. It was so gentle and happy, he could feel the corners of his lips turn up to.
"You just joined, right? You must be new."

"Yes, De Arimasu." Jade replied. She couldn't keep her self from asking Shade next. She wanted to know. He seemed gentle, like a person who cared about his friends. "Why did you join, De Arimasu?"

The question startled Shade. He turns and meets her eyes. She's still a kid. And he can tell she is genuinely serious. Her innocent eyes stare at him with curiosity. What was with her? Something about her made Shade relax and want to tell her.
"I didn't want to at first...My father erased my memory of the past when I lived in the Underworld. All I want if to remember. And my mentor, Dodge is being kept alive by Gaea. I need to keep him living. But I went into battle, and nearly killed my best friend. He's probably dead by now. And I attacked my half sister and my girlfriend...!"
Releasing what he felt was relieving for some reason. Like he was confessing his guilt. More words spilled out as he closed his eyes and sighed.
"I'm despicable! The hurt in their eyes was...I just....!"

Watching Shade pour out all his feelings made her own heart throb. She was still a small child. She reached out to comfort him, touching his shoulder lightly.
"They worry about you, you know. You feel like your luck is turning against you, isn't it? You feel like you have no path to take. So you're breaking yourself by moving on, continuously choosing the wrong path and blaming yourself for it, when in reality, all the paths you can walk are wrong. So it's not your fault. Don't blame yourself." Izumi's words are gentle, and full of wisdom beyond her age. She hade experienced dealing with feelings too much. Because she faced her own.

Shade opened his eyes. Her words were so comforting for some reason. She looked young, but her words were filled with knowledge. They took away the pressure. Was it really not his fault? Shade looked at Jade for a second, realizing what her words were about.
"You said all my paths were wrong. Following Gaea is wrong? Aren't you following her too?"

Jade pulled back her arm reflexively at his question. She had given too much away. "I meant...I didn't mean that, De Arimasu." She willed herself to stop stammering. But he knew already. She had broken eye contact in nervousness.

"I'm..." It was over. He had seen through her. Izumi was out of options. She hoped that Shade really was the nice person she thought he was. Her eyes pleaded with him. "I'm a spy."

Suddenly, the accusation in his eyes makes her furious instead of flinching back like she normally would.
"You think I'm horrible, don't you? You think I'm a traitor! Well look who betrayed his friends! His camp! I was never loyal to Gaea! I'm not a traitor like you! I stick to my loyalties!" Her voice raises, luckily everyone including Gaea was paying attention at the battle. No one was here.

"Wait, Jade...That's not it."
For some reason, her words sting more than any he had heard before. He reached to touch her shoulder, reassure her or something. He realized she had lost the polite phrase. She was probably too angry to be polite anymore.

The punch caught Shade by surprise, and his head jerked to the side. He grabbed her arm that had punched him.
"That's not it, Jade! I'm not going to give you away! I won't! I promise! Calm down!"
His eyes were sad at her words. She was seeing him as he really was. He was a fool that couldn't do anything on his own. This girl was waking him up. Telling him he had made the wrong descision.

Jade struggled, trying to get out of his grip, but his words calmed her down. "You won't tell...?" Her words were confused. She looked up, seeing his sad hazel eyes. And she began to cry. She grabbed him with her small arms and just sat in his large lap sobbing.
