Terry rolled to the side, dodging the silver staff that missed his face by a centimeter. He blocked the next blow and swung a return with his golden one. Her silver staff was identical not including the colors. He managed to catch her staff with his, twisting it upward and sending it flying out of her hand. They both stopped for a moment, gazing at each other.
Elaine smiled at him. "You're still the best. No one can beat you." She turned around, flipping here long hair behind her shoulder. The morning sun creeped through the trees, flashing through the light brown strands, nearly making them yellow in color.
"I'm not. You got really close. There's still Dodge." Terry pointed out his older brother.
"Besides your brother, I meant." Elaine turned around, her bright green eyes shining. "I can never beat you, you know it's true. Isn't that right, Mr. Genius?" She walked off, heading back from the middle of the forest.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Terry jogged after Elaine. His staff shimmered and disappeared into the air. He was holding the staff that Elaine had used. "Hey, don't leave me behind! And you forgot Kevin's staff. Don't just borrow something then leave it!"
"Sorry, sorry, I forgot." Elaine turned around and took the staff. "Shall we head back?"
"....Yeah."
"We're back!" Terry opened the door to his house, looking inside. A small figure immediately attacked him. Terry caught his little brother as he tackled him.
"You took so long, Terry! Where's my staff?" Kevin looked up at him with his wide gray eyes. Terry replied by handing him the silver staff. The eleven year old boy's eyes lit up in delight. He grabbed it and spun it around. "That's what I'm talking about!" The kid spun it quickly and it dispersed into the air. "Thanks for not damaging it, Elaine!"
"It's a magical item from mom, you can't damage it." Terry pointed out.
"Stupid nerd brother always has to ruin it. Keeping Elaine to yourself, you selfish jerk." His little brother teased him, sticking out his tongue.
"Why you little-" Terry tried to catch him, but he darted off. Elaine smiled and laughed.
A hand came from the stairs and grabbed Kevin just as he was about to escape. They lifted him into the air. Dodge let out a yawn, carrying their smallest brother on one shoulder. "Don't be so noisy at this time of the day, Kevin. Morning Terry, Elaine."
"Did you just wake up? You work too hard on your job." Terry told him. He went to the kitchen to make breakfast. It was a typical Saturday. Fifteen year old Terry began to heat the stove. Eighteen year old Dodge shrugged and sat down, not bothering with his messy dark brown hair. Terry's girlfriend sat at the table, playing with his small brother. Elaine laughed as Kevin began to tell jokes about Terry.
As usual, Terry rolled his eyes and told Kevin not to talk about this or that. Today was Elaine's birthday. Outside of their family, she was their only special person. The only mortal who knew they were demigods. She could see through the Mist. And today was Terry's special person's special day.
What was going on? This didn't make any sense...The screech of the monster attacked his ears as three exploded around him. Him and Dodge fought off one after another of the steady stream. Kevin was guarding Elaine who was unconscious on the floor of the forest. There was blood everywhere. It stained the leaves under her. There were splatters on Terry's clothes and glasses. But they were not his. They were Elaine's. She had jumped in behind him to block an attack he hadn't seen coming.
"Damn it....!" Terry turned another monster into dust. Where were they coming from? Why were there so many?
Terry stood at the doorway of Elaine's house. Her tears didn't make any sense to him.
"I'm so sorry! And I can't tell my parents....!"
"What are you saying...?" Terry looked at her with his stormy gray eyes. His voice was confused. He felt like someone was stabbing him over and over again.
"My parents don't know where these wounds are from. They blamed it all on you. They said I couldn't ever see you again. But I can't tell them the truth!" She sobbed, her tear dripping onto her cast. Terry had held her so tightly last night. He felt absolute relief. She had been alive. All that had happened was she broke her arm. She was still here...
She was not here. Terry jerked upright in his cabin bed, scratching his head. He was immediately woozy. What was that? Why was he dreaming about her now? It must have been Caroline at the party last night, asking him who he liked. He shook his head to himself. That was long over now. Was it that he hadn't gotten over her? Was that the reason he was so defensive? But she was out of his reach.
Terry got up and changed out of his pajamas, tidying himself up. He grabbed his glasses and a book and slid out into the clearing. It was still early in the morning, he looked around for someone.
